LITERACY PROFILE

i truly enjoy reading! unfortunately life giving me extra time to read is another thing, unless you count nightly readings of beatrix potter and berenstien bears.  that is why i love literature classes, i am forced to make the time to read and have been introduced to many authors in the last two years. books are a passion of mine. i will never, never own an e-reader and i began collecting books this past year. it is nothing much yet, i've only purchased some sixty books in the past six months, and nothing too valuable. i have found a couple first editions of obscure books that are worth 50 or 100 bucks, that i picked up for a dollar or two, but i'm sure its nothing anyone would be familiar with. i've been on a pennsylvania kick lately and have been scooping up books by updike, o'hara, jackson taylor, and tawni o'dell- all pa authors. i do not have any favorite authors... i used to be really into palaniuk, but it seems his work has become a cliche of itself. my fiance and i have re-discovered the brilliant talent of jane austin, and she is pleading with me to get with the times and read at least one harry potter book.

Hahaha. I truly love this post. I especially love the fact that your wife is going to "make" you read Harry Potter. Good for her! The books are brilliantly written-a definite must read.

True story about the E-Reader. I got a Nook for Christmas. I was super excited about it, but the funny thing was that after using it the first time, I found myself more interested in the Pandora radio application that was on it then reading any of the books. Long story short, I ended up taking it back with no regrets at all. I didn't like the weirdly fonted script of the electronic format, the touchscreen was difficult to use, etc. It made me want to read less rather than more. Not to mention that the good ole USA has given us these amazing places called libraries where all the books are free. Why would I ever want to pay for an electronic experience that is just not as enjoyable when I can soak up a million bookshelves full of free books just waiting to jump into my lap!

  2. I *almost* bought a Nook for Christmas. I think I'm glad I didn't...

I learned to appreciate Jane Austen much later in life. It took some coaxing, but I quite like her now!

I'm curious how you will begin to transmit your love of books--the good, old fashioned kind written on nice-smelling paper no less--to students who are increasingly engaged in technology.
